ChatGPT for Teachers is a version of ChatGPT built specifically for K-12 teachers that was released on 11/19/2025. In addition to providing access to the same advanced AI models that are available under ChatGPT paid plans, it contains a number of tools and built-in prompts that may assist in generating classroom materials.
More information about ChatGPT for Teachers is available on OpenAI’s website: https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-for-teachers/
ChatGPT for Teachers is approved for use by D-E employees and is covered by education-specific data privacy protections. Conversations with the ChatGPT for Teachers are not used to train AI models.
By contrast, ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus are individual consumer accounts and are not approved for school use by employees. These consumer accounts are not covered by the same data privacy protections available to education and business accounts.
How to Get Started:
In November 2025, all school employees received an email invitation from OpenAI as an invitation to ChatGPT for Teachers. In the email, click Join workspace.
When prompted, either Log in with an existing ChatGPT account, or Sign up to create a new account.
You can use Sign in with Google or Sign in with Microsoft to easily sign in or create an account with your D-E email address without needing to create a password for ChatGPT.
You may be prompted to verify that you are a teacher. If so, fill in the School name, your name, and your D-E email address. Click Verify My Educator Status.
You may be prompted to upload documents to verify your Educator status. As part of our initial email to teachers, we sent an employment verification letter that you can upload to complete this step.
Once the verification process is complete, ChatGPT will link your account to the Dwight-Englewood Workspace in the platform.
If you can’t find the invitation email, or if you have any questions about the sign up process, please reach out to the Technology Help Desk: help@d-e.org
Yes. OpenAI uses SheerID to confirm educator eligibility. You’ll complete a quick verification step after clicking the invite link. It usually takes just a few minutes.
SheerID is a company that provides identity verification services. You can read more about SheerID including viewing their privacy policy on their website: https://www.sheerid.com/global-privacy-policy/
ChatGPT for Teachers is only available for Dwight-Englewood employees. While ChatGPT for Teachers can be used to create materials for use with students, the tool itself is not available for student use.
When you click the invitation link for ChatGPT for Teachers, OpenAI will recognize if an existing account and prompt you to migrate it into the school’s workspace. You won’t need to create a new account.
During migration, you’ll be given two choices:
Transfer your data (chat history and custom GPTs) into the Dwight-Englewood School Workspace
Export and delete your existing data before joining.
If you have lesson ideas or important chats saved, we recommend exporting a backup before accepting the invite.
ChatGPT for Teachers is approved for use by D-E employees and is covered by education-specific data privacy protections. Conversations with the ChatGPT for Teachers are not used to train AI models. All D-E email accounts must be created or transferred to ChatGPT for teachers.
If you currently have a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription under your school email, that subscription will be canceled when your account moves into the Dwight-Englewood ChatGPT for Teachers workspace. You won’t be charged going forward, and you’ll instead get access to ChatGPT through the school’s plan.
The Dwight-Englewood Technology Department may have administrative access to manage workspace settings, permissions, and usage. This access is designed for compliance and support, not for monitoring content, but please remember that your school account should be used for school-related purposes only.
Per the ChatGPT for Teachers Terms of Service, your account should only be used for school-related purposes. It is recommended that you create a separate personal account with another email address if you wish to use ChatGPT for personal projects.

ChatGPT for Teachers accounts are flagged as educational accounts. OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, states: “Anything you share with ChatGPT for Teachers is not used to train our models by default, and the workspace is built to protect student data”.
