A school-managed iPad does not allow Family Time to be used. The following directions are for setting up Screen Time settings and a Screen Time passcode to lock content restrictions.
You will select a 4-digit PIN for the parents to use. This PIN must be different from the iPad's unlock screen passcode.
Content restrictions are handled by the school's internet filter on campus, but this setup allows you to enforce restrictions when the device is used at home.
The only way a student can remove the restriction is by guessing the 4-digit PIN or using the recovery Apple ID (parent's) to reset it.
Select the Settings Icon.
Scroll down the left side and find the Screen Time section.
Select Turn on Screen Time to view app and website activity.
If you would like to enable the time the app will not work, please click on the above to set night time schedule.
This Feature will give you stats of app and website activity that can be used to speak with the student as to how they are using time on the electronic device
Downtime allows you to schedule a time period when the iPad cannot be used.
You can set a nightly schedule and also customize the days this will be enforced
On campus content settings are handled by the content filter. At home you can set general guidelines by selecting this option
Students do not have access to the app store so the first 2 settings are not needed to be set. Setting number 2 can cause issues with certain apps. App Store/Media/Web/Games is best to start here
Under Content Options, you can customize content ratings.
When selecting web content option, you can limit adult website and can block any others by adding it the never allow section
Once all settings are configured, click Lock Screen Time Settings.
Enter a 4-digit PIN that your student does not know. You will enter it twice.
Enter a recovery Apple ID (parent's) that the student does not have access to. This is to prevent the student from emailing themselves the PIN reset link.
Enter your Apple ID password and hit OK
Once complete, click on the General settings tab. This step is necessary to lock your changes in and prevent the student from quickly making other changes while the password was entered.
Once this has been set anytime a student trys to make a change, it will prompt for a password. If a student trys to remove the pin, it will prompt for the pin, or asks to enter recovery email
Only the Email you set as the recovery will work to be able to remove the pin setting
If the student tries to use an AppleID besides what you entered, you will get a failure attempt.
Keep the 4-digit PIN secure and remember your recovery Apple ID.
Anytime you make a change, go back to the General tab to ensure the settings are locked.
Use caution with App Limits, as this feature could prevent students from using necessary apps in school if they use up all the available time outside of school. The documentation suggests Downtime is a better practice for limiting overall time at home.
If a student tries to make any change or remove the PIN, it will prompt for the PIN or the recovery email/password.
